West Coast Classic Open House

Corey, Scott Taylor, and Everett (+ Jen), all showed up at my place yesterday where we all caravanned to Lenny Copp's shop in Fullerton for West Coast Classic's Open House. About 40 or so VW's turned out for a rather nice showing. We met up with Jason and Russell who drove up from San Diego that morning. I also got to meet one of our newest member's Rick Christensen and his son who both drove down from the PNW in their '65 Notch and Type-34 Ghia, respectively. Rob showed up an hour or so later after retrieving his beautiful bride, Kir, from LAX. The Volksworld photographer, Kiki, instructed Rob that he wanted to shoot his car in front of some vintage homes in an old neighborhood that the members of Social Distortion grew up in. So Jason, driving my "Pepto-Gizmo", Kir, and I tagged along. After consuming massive amounts of beer watching Kiki and ZZ-Top look alike, shoot hundreds of photos, we got into the mix. Here are the pictures to prove it!

Saturday

1500 Club Meeting at Old World in Huntington Beach at Noon, I got to meet shiny new members Eric Colla and Joel. We were floored when Pedro rolled up with his new "Rack-Back". Took an opportunity for a photo-shoot even though there was an Infinity parked in one of the parking spaces. Members who showed up were, Jason, Rob, Eric, Jack, Dave, Pedro, Joel, Rick, Scott, Russell, and myself.

So then we all head out in a caravan on the 405 Freeway heading North to ISP for their Annual Bar-B-Q. Special Thanks goes out to Alex and Anthony, and everyone else who helped organize this event.

Sunday

This year's Classic had the most ever Type-3s in it's History. About 100 or so in all, dwarfing last year's record of 54. Deena's Safari Beige Squareback won first in her class, whereas Rob Kingsbury took 3rd and Oscar's Anthracite took second. I wish to take a moment to reflect on Rob's disappointing third place. I believe that due to the fact that entire row of Type-3s was filled with about 35 cars, and since we setup shop near the end, it is apparent that many people didn't want to bother to walk the entire row. The car that won first is by no means remotely even close to the caliber of the Kingsbury Notch... hell it's not even the correct color. I feel that many people just walked about 100 feet and saw the first Birch-Green notch and decided that was good enough. Next year we will need to all get there earlier for a spot at the beginning of the row and I guarantee, Rob will rightfully win the Best Vintage Notch as he deserves. I hate People's Choice choice when the people have no interest in the vehicle. [Giz steps down from his soapbox]

Let me officially state that Mr. Robert "Snotchback" is the Accessory Warlord. You can see some of his Type-3 and not-so-Type-3 goodies on Oscar's Anthracite Notch. Some very cool stuff indeed!

After the Classic awards were given out, Kiki, Volksworld photographer, and all of us 'Clubbers', drove to a business park down the street for a very in-depth photo shoot. Even though Kiki's driver committed 2 or 3 moving violations, we all followed liked ducklings to water. Irvine PD was out in force trying to catch as many as they could as people vacated the Show. I guess they were trying to meet their quota.
